Precious Metals Weights and Measures
Precious metals are normally weighed using the Troy Ounce system, which is different from the more familiar ounces we use for measuring everyday goods. One troy ounce is around 10% heavier than a regular ounce, which means that if you weigh your 1 oz coin on your regular kitchen scales, it will show a larger weight in regular ounces, which are also known as Avoirdupois ounces. This is why we recommend that you always measure the weight of your bullion in grams if you do not have a troy ounce scale.
