$5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle (XF)
The $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle coins feature an incuse design – a unique feature that is not common to most coins anywhere in the world, which adds to the collectability of the coin.
The Indian Head was the last of the Half Eagle coin designs, and it was only produced between 1908 and 1916. The production was suspended during the period of World War I and resumed for one year in 1929.
All of the characteristics, such as diameter, weight, and composition of the Indian Head were unchanged from the previous versions of the Half Eagle but the design was altered significantly. It was unique as it was stamped in incuse, which means that, unlike most traditional coins, the highest point of the Indian Head Gold Half Eagle were the actual flat surfaces, rather than a raised design. The obverse features a profile of an Indian Head wearing the traditional feathered headdress. The reverse depicts a majestic eagle and the inscriptions: United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust and the coin’s denomination of Five Dollars.
