Since February 24, 2014 Russia has had an escalating presence in the Crimean Peninsula.
It’s speculated that Russia has approximately 16,000 troops currently in Ukraine. Furthermore, when the Russian troops came face to face with Ukrainian forces, the Russians threatened them with assault if they did not stand down.
Russia has now entered the borders of a sovereign nation. That deeply concerns world leaders, Primarily the G8.
The Russian troops have moved to “…seize, block, and control crucial governmental and military objects of Ukraine in Crimea.” Said Ukrainian Ambassador – Yuriy Sergeyev.
Collectively, there are conflicting reports of Russia’s actions and/or threats. It’s somewhat becoming a conflict where East meets West. Violence originally erupted after the once President, Viktor F. Yanukovych shunned the west and moved to have closer ties with Russia. Russia currently believes that Mr. Yanukovych is the true president of Ukraine right now. Furthermore, Russia claims Mr. Yanukovych wrote them requesting military assistance. Today, there was pressure on Ukrainian officials to declare their loyalty to the New Russia authorities.
