Product Details

Each 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin offered by Veldt Gold today comes from a random year of production. First issued in 1987, these coins have been minted every year since. You will receive a 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin from a year between 1987 and the present, with the specific year determined by availability in our warehouse when your order is processed for shipping.

The Gold Britannia Coin has undergone significant changes throughout its 30-year history. Initially struck in 22-karat gold, or .917 gold content, the Royal Mint increased the gold content to 24-karat, .9999 pure gold starting in 2013. Additionally, the obverse design has evolved over time to reflect updates to Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait.

On the obverse of the 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coin, you could find one of three different effigies of Queen Elizabeth II. Coins issued from 1987 to 1997 feature the third-generation depiction by Raphael Maklouf, who first created his portrait of the Queen in 1984. Coins issued from mid-2023 onward feature King Charles III in left-profile relief.

Coins issued from 1998 until 2015 display the right-profile portrait created by Ian Rank-Broadley, the fourth-generation image. This was replaced in 2016 by the fifth-generation portrait of the Queen at age 89, created by Jody Clark, who became the youngest Royal Mint engraver to design the Queen’s effigy.

The reverse of all 1 oz British Gold Britannia Coins consistently features the same design. Britannia, depicted as an imposing female goddess, is said to protect the British Isles from foreign invaders. She is shown at the nation’s southern tip, looking out over the English Channel. Her shield bears the Union Jack of the national flag, her trident in her right hand symbolizes control over the sea, and her Corinthian helmet provides protection as she stands in defense of the nation.
