Product Details

The Royal Mint in London, one of the oldest operational minting facilities in the world, has been producing coins for the United Kingdom for over a millennium. It is the birthplace of some of the finest coins in existence today. For those seeking truly unique coins, Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins are now available through Veldt Gold, purchasable with Bitcoin, Monero, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.

Great Britain’s gold coins were among the first to be used worldwide as the British Empire expanded. The original English gold sovereign, last minted in 1604, was named for its depiction of the sovereign leader of the British Empire.

Modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins resumed production in 1817 following the Great Recoinage of 1816. These coins were minted annually for 100 years, with an additional production year in 1925 before regular minting resumed in 1957.

All Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins feature the iconic reverse image of St. George mounted on horseback as he slays a dragon. This design, created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817, includes the year of minting.

The obverse side of each gold sovereign consistently depicts a profile of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Older coins feature profiles of Queen Victoria at three different stages of her reign, as well as images of King Edward VII and King George V. Since 1957, all Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins have featured Queen Elizabeth II, with three versions of her right-profile portrait.

While most of these coins were produced by the Royal Mint in London, they have also been struck at mints in Australia, Canada, and South Africa. Today, some are even minted by MMTC-PAMP in Delhi, India.
