Product Details
South Africa has long been renowned for its abundant precious metal and gemstone resources. With some of the world's largest gold reserves, it was the first country to issue a commemorative gold bullion coin as a national marketing initiative. Today, Veldt Gold offers the 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand, available in various years and purchasable with Bitcoin, Monero, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.
The South African Gold Krugerrand was launched in 1967 as South Africa's official bullion coin, marking the first commemorative gold bullion coin available for private ownership. For over 12 years, it dominated the market until the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was introduced.
Krugerrand coins were the first bullion coins to have legal tender status, despite lacking a face value inscription. The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the four-term President of the South African Republic, which was designed in 1967.
The reverse side depicts a springbok, a native antelope species and national symbol of South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg. This image previously appeared on the reverse of South African five shilling coins. Inscriptions on both sides of the coin are in Afrikaans and English.
Krugerrand coins in this listing come from various years and may exhibit signs of handling, such as abrasions or light wear. We cannot guarantee a specific year or condition for the coin you receive. Purchasing multiple coins may result in receiving several with matching dates.
Between 1967 and 1979, nearly 22 million South African Gold Krugerrands were sold and shipped to buyers in the United States until Western nations imposed an embargo on South African goods in response to its apartheid policies. Today, the Krugerrand remains popular, available in both bullion and proof versions, with fractional weights of ½ oz., ¼ oz., and 1/10 oz.
The 1 oz Gold Krugerrand has been the cornerstone of the Krugerrand Series for over fifty years. In celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2017, a Silver Krugerrand was introduced, which has also gained popularity. Nonetheless, the 1 oz Gold Krugerrand remains the most coveted coin in the series.
